Superintendent’s Message

{This first paragraph could go on the cover page overlaying the photo.  If there is a place for the entire description, maybe under the District section, this whole thing would be fine.}
Welcome to our website and the Big Oak Flat – Groveland Unified School District.  Under the direction of our Governing Board, the staffs at our four district schools work hard to provide the best possible educational experience for our students.  I am very proud of the accomplishments of both our students and district staff as we work to improve each day.  The Governing Board has demonstrated a strong commitment to all four schools in our district and the students and communities they serve.

The Big Oak Flat–Groveland USD offers students a wide variety of educational and co-curricular opportunities and programs in a small school setting that places emphasis on the success of each student.  Working together as a team, we have created an environment that meets student’s individual needs and helps them develop and learn within a safe and positive structure.

Presently, in addition to teaching the required state standards, we are working to improve our technology infrastructure and network speed which will allow our students increased access to technology.   We hope to have high speed internet to all sites in the near future.  We have a computer lab at each school and have purchased over 200 IPADs that are in use at the school sites.

The Tenaya Elementary School gym is a model for other schools to see.  It serves as an athletic facility as well as a venue for the arts.  The community is always welcome to make use of the facility for appropriate community events.   And, there is a new playground at Tenaya Elementary, which was completed during the summer of 2013.  A music program has been added back in the Tenaya schedule after several years without a formal music program.

Don Pedro High School has an Agriculture program that is growing at a remarkable rate.  The students, members of Future Farmers of America, have a campus farm that is growing in size and functionality.  The club is competing in judging competitions all over the central valley and is doing very well, even when competing against large high schools.  There is a green house, a chicken coop, and a welding shop that complement the program at Don Pedro High.

Tioga High has a full complement of programs, and has a new 3-D printer lab that was donated to by the Tuolumne County Workforce Investment personnel.  It gives our students and community members (yes, it is open to the community!) a chance to learn a highly technical skill that can be used for an entrepreneurial endeavor.  There is also an excellent weight room, gym facility and Academic Decathlon program.

In today’s increasingly complex world and with the difficult economic times we are facing as a nation, it is more important than ever that we work in a collaborative and supportive manner to achieve our goals.  If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school, district staff or me, personally.  In this way, we can work as an educational community to solve problems.  Thanks for your interest and involvement in our district.
